Rooftop tent comparison.

A rooftop tent is a long lead-time purchase that spends its life on the roof of a moving vehicle, in actual weather, miles from the maker. This guide walks the questions a buyer should ask before committing to one — in the order StoneWave asks them, and with the answers we’d want to hear from any maker we list.

StoneWave doesn’t publish a comparison score, doesn’t award points across categories, and doesn’t name a winner. That posture is deliberate: a scorecard is a way to avoid the conversation, and the conversation is the only thing that decides whether a tent will hold up on the trip you’re actually taking. The six sections that follow are the questions we apply when we evaluate a rooftop tent for the catalogue. They are also the questions a buyer should ask a maker directly. The maker’s answers — and how candidly they’re given — are worth more than any review.

The question

Mount compatibility

A rooftop tent is only as solid as the rack it rides on, and the right tent on the wrong rack is a warranty claim waiting to happen. Begin with the cross-bar profile: round, square, aero, or channel-style. Most softshells expect roughly eighty to one hundred millimetres of bar contact at each mounting bracket; hardshells can sit narrower, but only because they’re carrying the load through the shell and not the fabric. If the rack’s own dynamic rating is below the figure the maker publishes, no tent — no matter how disciplined — is going to save you.

The second question is about the rail system. Aftermarket expedition racks tend to run T-slot or channel crossbars where the tent’s mounting bolts pass through the channel and bite the bar with a backing plate or sliding nut. Ask whether the maker ships universal channel hardware, or whether the tent is engineered for a specific rail ecosystem. The answer tells you whether the maker has tested the tent against an actual rack or has only tested it against the maker’s own preferred platform.

Finally, ask whether the mounting hardware is field-serviceable. Cable-driven latches, replaceable clevis pins, and standard M8 hardware can be fixed with a multi-tool on a Saturday afternoon. Rivet-nut assemblies, welded brackets, and potted fittings are depot fixes that cost you a freight window. The first tells you a stuck latch doesn’t end the trip; the second tells you it does.

Shell material and seasons rated

A rooftop tent’s season rating is a function of three layers, not one — the outer shell, the rainfly, and the inner tent or quilt. The maker’s published three-season or four-season rating is only as honest as its weakest layer. A two-hundred-and-eighty-gram poly-cotton ripstop outer is more weather-tolerant than a two-hundred-and-ten-denier Oxford poly in a long rain, but if the fly is a thin polyester, the rating follows the fly. Cross-check the spec sheet against the layer-by-layer breakdown and look for the place where the maker has decided not to say.

Shell material choice is downstream of where you actually go, not upstream of it. Hardshell composites — ABS, aluminium-over-HDPE, FRP — carry snow load and shrug off low branches on a forest track. Softshell poly-cotton breathes in summer heat and lives a quieter life on a roof rack through a long equator crossing. Both are legitimate answers. The wrong answer is a hardshell bought for a Saharan rotation, or a softshell bought for a winter crossing. Match the shell to the trip you actually run, not the trip the catalogue copy is selling.

The question that often decides this in the trial period is where the seam work fails first. A taped, welded, or stitched-and-sealed seam is a tested outcome. A stitched seam without a tape strip is a marketing claim. Ask the maker which seams are taped, where the tape is applied, and how the tape holds up after the first dozen wet nights — the answer tends to come back either specific or vague, and the gear is on the line either way.

Weather rating

The difference between a water-resistant and a waterproof tent is the difference between a header and a hydrostatic-head number. A fly rated to three thousand millimetres of hydrostatic head will hold a wet night; a fly rated to fifteen hundred millimetres will, eventually, leak. Ask the maker for the exact published number on the fly and on the floor tub. If they don’t publish one, that is itself a sign — and not the kind that favours the catalogue line.

Wind rating matters more than most published copy admits. Thirty kilometres an hour steady with gusts to fifty will test every seam and latch on the tent, and most ratings on the spec sheet are steady-state, not gust. Ask the maker what the rated sustained wind is, whether the ladder is anchored, and what happens to the rating when the ladder is partially blocked by a vehicle door. A ladder that walks in a gust is the single most common rooftop-tent failure mode in real overlanding use, and it is almost never the line that fails first in marketing copy.

Snow and dust deserve their own paragraph. Snow loading on a closed hardshell can run into hundreds of kilograms if the unit sits through a storm at altitude — ask the maker what the published static load is, and whether the figure assumes a cleared shell mid-trip or an uncleared shell after a long stop. Desert sand is a slower, quieter failure: fine silt penetrates mesh ceilings and slowly abrades the inner fabric. Ask whether the inner mesh is a fine-weave that holds silt out, and how the inner is cleaned without pulling the unit apart.

Warranty track record

A warranty is a forecast of how the maker will behave when something fails on the second trip, not the first. Read the warranty card once. Read it again. The first thing to look for is whether the warranty is prorated or replacement-first. Prorated means the maker will pay a fraction of a failing part’s replacement cost and you will pay the rest; replacement-first means the maker bets the unit can be replaced from depot stock and shipped out the same week. The second posture tells you a great deal about how the maker thinks about the depot behind the catalogue page.

The second thing to look for is the consumables window. Gaskets, O-rings, dust seals, replaceable fuse elements, gas struts, and zippers all have a published service life, and every one of them is going to wear out before the unit does. A warranty that excludes consumables past ninety days is honest about the cycle; a warranty that excludes them forever is a tell that the maker does not want to be on the hook for the parts that fail first. Neither is a deal-breaker on its own, but ask which approach the maker has actually taken, on the published card, not on the catalogue page.

The third is the depot review path. A warranty process that requires the buyer to ship the unit back to a single origin depot is a slow process; a warranty process that lets a regional distributor cross-ship from a forward-stocked part is a fast one. The structure tells you everything about the maker’s real network. Find out which one the maker runs, because that determines whether you get the unit back before the season starts or after it ends.

Supplier reliability

A maker’s reliability is downstream of their supply chain. Some makers weave their own fabric; some source from a mill in one country, cut and sew in another, and assemble in a third. Both are legitimate, and the honest answer on a serious spec sheet is which is which. The question to ask is whether the maker can tell you where the critical parts come from — fly, frame, gas struts, mounting hardware, mattress — and whether they hold buffer stock of each at the depot that ships your unit.

A catalogue line that reads "in stock" tells you almost nothing. A catalogue line that reads "depot handoff in five to ten business days from confirmed order" tells you a great deal more. Ask the maker for the actual depot-to-door timeline, not the catalogue’s published ship date. The first is a forecast; the second is often a marketing number rounded to the nearest season. The difference between them is the difference between a kit that arrives in time and a kit that arrives after the trip.

For StoneWave specifically, the makers we list at launch are the makers whose freight plan we can verify in writing. The plan, the depot cut window, and the ETA are quoted per order, before the unit ships, and what we quote is the maker’s published plan unchanged. We don’t add margin to the ETA, we don’t round it down to look better, and we don’t substitute a domestic distributor when an international freight leg slips. That posture is the only honest posture, and it is the one this guide is built on.

Shipping reality

A rooftop tent is oversized freight, and most freight forwarders handle it badly. The right shipping path involves a forwarder who has shipped rooftop tents before, who knows the freight class, who has the right lifting gear at the depot on both ends, and who can quote business-day ranges from origin to destination — not from an arbitrary "ship date" that the catalogue is publishing. If the forwarder can only quote from ship date, the answer is already in the question.

Customs is where most first-purchase surprises start. A DDP — delivered duty paid — path means the freight forwarder carries the duty on your behalf and the unit arrives without a customs bill. A DDU — delivered duty unpaid — path means you’re on the hook for duty when the unit clears, sometimes six weeks after you ordered it. Ask the maker and the freight forwarder which one they’re quoting. DDP is more expensive; DDU is slower and more surprising; the honest maker says which one up front so the buyer can decide.

Finally, freight damage is its own category, and a serious maker has a defined protocol for it. A trustworthy path includes a signed-release hand-off at delivery, a photographic intake at the depot, and a damage-claim window — usually forty-eight to seventy-two hours post-delivery. If the maker doesn’t describe all three, that is the third tell of a catalogue line that hasn’t been tested against real freight. A tent that arrives damaged and a maker who won’t discuss the protocol is a refund argument, not a warranty path; ask before you pay.
